2018 Deaf Studies Conference
Gallaudet University

November 1-3, 2018

We live in a time of enormous social, political and technological change, a time when categories, identities, boundaries, are becoming increasingly fluid, a time that is increasingly transformational.

This simple prefix--trans-- conveys the contemporary context of dynamic change, referring to that which is “across,” “beyond,” “through,” “on the other side,” “thoroughly changed.” Formation refers to that which is emerging, coming into being; an arrangement or structure.

When put together, transformation holds the hope of liberating oppressive frameworks through the generation of new knowledge and perspectives.

What new transformational academic practices are made possible in a time of trans-thinking, that which is transdisciplinary, transnational, translocal, transitional, and translanguaging?

How can Deaf Studies engage in such transformative work, where advancements in theory, methodology, and technology are translated into practices of local and global citizenship, and where human rights and social justice work is translated into theoretical insights and methodological practices?

The 2018 Deaf Studies Conference aims to explore those questions and more--hence, the theme "Transformations". Come one and all!
