KDES Guest Speaker Announcement

Claudia Gordon is the first female African American deaf lawyer in the United States. She is also the first deaf student to graduate in 2000, from the American University (AU) Washington College of Law, in Washington, DC. At AU, Gordon specialized in disability rights law and policy. Since earning her juris doctorate from AU, Gordon has been actively working to ensure that the rights of people with disabilities are respected.  Claudia became deaf at age 8 and is originally from a rural town in Jamaica W.I. She immigrated to South Bronx with her mom at age 11. She was a top student at the Lexington School for the Deaf where she graduated in 1990.  She then enrolled at Howard University earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science.  Ms. Gordon was handpicked to work and serve in the Obama administration and held several post throughout her 2009 – 2017 tenure including serving as an Associate Director of Public Engagement in the White House’s Office of Public Engagement. In that capacity, she served as the liaison to the disability community and advised on disability policies. She has received numerous awards and accolades for her work.
