Teaching and Working Remotely

Gallaudet Technology Services (GTS) and the eLearning Center have prepared a guide for online teaching and learning: Ways to keep teaching and learning during a school disruption. This information is for faculty, employees, and students.

GTS also prepared a List of Technology Resources and Tools. This list includes links for how to access the service and links for how to get started using them.

Preparing for Remote Teaching

Read the guide for online teaching and learning during school disruptions. Think about what parts of your course could be moved online. Try out the various tools and suggestions to familiarize yourself with using them.

Stop by Merrill Learning Center, Room B205 to meet with eLearning staff to get ideas, support, and training. Staff will be available on weekdays from 1-6 p.m. through March 27.

I use an interpreter and/or I have students in my class who use an interpreter, can I still get services and how?

If you have Deaf or hearing interpreters working in your classroom, notify Gallaudet Interpreting Services at gis.confirmations@gallaudet.edu immediately so they can make appropriate changes.
Faculty who use interpreters will be supported with interpreting and/or faculty mentors to provide content for their online classes.

Are you ready to work remotely?

Note that the most commonly used resources such as mail, Bison, and Blackboard can be accessed via the my.gallaudet.edu portal. Be sure to log into the portal (upper right corner) and you will see lists of quick links on the right-hand side that are tailored to your role(s) at Gallaudet.

If you have a Gallaudet-provided device, bring your device home with you every day.

If you don’t have a Gallaudet-provided laptop or computer at home, you may need to take some extra steps to ensure your device is secure, especially when working on sensitive Gallaudet data. For more information, visit the List of Technology Resources and Tools.

Here are some questions you should ask yourself:

Do you have access to your email, calendar, and files?

Log into your Email and Calendar

You can log into your Gallaudet email and calendar at mail.gallaudet.edu. You can also find this link on the my.gallaudet.edu portal.

I can’t log into my email account. It is asking for my 2-step-verification code which goes to my office desk phone but I’m at home.

If this is you, be sure to update where you get your verification codes now. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6051686?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en

Access your files remotely

Think about the files and systems you’ll need to access from home. Are your files stored on your desktop or in a cloud-based storage? If you have files stored on your desktop or in a shared NAS folder you will need to ensure that you can use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) to Remote Desktop Connect (RDC).

An easier solution, however, is to move these files to Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive. By doing that you will be able to use any computer and any browser to log into OneDrive or Google Drive and read, edit, and share your files.

See the List of Technology Resources and Tools for more information.

How will you handle phone and video calls?

Can you forward your calls? We are working with our voice phone system and VRS providers for information about forwarding voice and video calls. If you have not done so already, it is also a best practice to set up an away message on your voice and/or video phone and provide an alternative way to contact you. See the List of Technology Resources and Tools for more information about forwarding calls.

How will you access services, systems, and tools?

GTS has prepared a List of Technology Resources and Tools. This list includes links for how to access the service and links for how to get started using them.

Note that the most commonly used resources such as mail, Bison, and Blackboard can be accessed via the my.gallaudet.edu portal. Be sure to log into the portal (upper right corner) and you will see lists of quick links on the right-hand side that are tailored to your role(s) at Gallaudet.
