Onboarding New Hires

Onboarding is a critical process that helps new hires adjust to social and performance aspects of their new jobs quickly and smoothly. An effective onboarding program has been proven to increase job satisfaction, increase performance, and reduce turnover. By following this checklist, it will help ensure that the employee has a smooth transition into the new position.

As a manager, you play the most important role in onboarding new employees.  It is important to ensure that everything, including office, computer, VP/phone, is set up prior to your new employee's first day.  However, it is also critical to
develop an effective onboarding plan for the new employee, which should include reviewing of departmental policies and procedures, providing job-related training, introducing new employees to their team members and other stakeholders, and reviewing expectations.  The new employee should have a peer mentor to ask questions, gain knowledge, and explore the culture and help them understand Gallaudet's missions, goals, and values.  Please contact Human Resources Services if you are in need of guidance.

A checklist is available to assist managers with the onboarding process.  The checklist can be found here.  Feel free to modify the checklist as needed to fit your department needs.
