Dear Campus Community:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Khadijat Rashid as Dean of the School of Education, Business and Human Services (SEBHS). Dr. Rashid has served with dedication and distinction as Interim Dean since 2017.

She has also taught in the School of International Service at American University and been an invited speaker at numerous universities and organizations.

Dr. Rashid has published scholarly articles and book chapters on subjects as varied as interpreter-deaf professional relationships, deaf people’s experience with implants; and deaf communities in Africa. She is the co-editor of Citizenship, Politics, Difference: Perspectives from Sub-Saharan African Communities. Washington, DC: Gallaudet University Press (2015). She has presented widely on her areas of specialization, including at the World Bank, the United Nations, the State Department, the US Agency for International Development, and the White House.

Dr. Rashid was chair of the University Faculty (2013-2016) and served as Chair of the Department of Business (2007-2010). In 2010-11, President Obama appointment her as a White House Fellow, and in that capacity, she worked closely with senior government officials, obtaining an in-depth view into the workings of the US government at the highest levels. The governor of Maryland appointed her to the board of the Maryland School for the Deaf where she served from 2008-2014 and she currently serves on the board of Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD); and South West Collegiate Institute for the Deaf in Big Spring, Texas.

I want to thank the members of the SEBHS Dean search committee: Thomas Allen, chair; faculty members Teresa Blankmeyer Burke, Keith Cagle, Margaux Delotte-Bennett, Larry Medwetsky; staff member Usherla DeBerry; undergraduate student Bethany Yance; and graduate student Kayla Dufrene. They devoted their time to the most recent search, and I am most appreciative.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Rashid on this appointment.
