Appointment of new Board of Trustees member, Dr. Natwar M. Gandhi

June 4, 2018

Dear Campus Community:

Gallaudet University is pleased to announce the appointment of a new member to its Board of Trustees: Dr. Natwar M. Gandhi. Familiar with the Gallaudet community and having served on the Gallaudet University Real Estate Foundation, Gandhi brings deep financial expertise, local roots, a passion for the arts, and new energy to our board.

Gandhi retired in January 2014 from a long tenure as the District of Columbia's independent chief financial officer (CFO), to which he was appointed by Mayor Anthony A. Williams in 2000, and re-appointed by mayors Adrian Fenty (2007) and Vincent C. Gray (2012). As CFO, Gandhi was responsible for Washington, D.C.’s finances, including approximately $13 billion in annual operating and capital funds, and more than 1,200 staff members. Gandhi's tenure as CFO transformed the District from a jurisdiction with a $550 million negative fund balance into a financially healthy municipality with a fund balance of $1.5 billion upon his retirement.

Gandhi’s local connections run deep. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Shakespeare Theater Company, the Honorary Board of Trustees of Arena Stage, and the Board of IIPL USA LLC, an infrastructure financing and leasing company. Gandhi previously sat on the boards of the Washington Convention and Sports Authority and Destination DC.

Gandhi holds a doctorate in accounting from Louisiana State University, a master’s degree in business administration from what is now Clark Atlanta University, and an L.L.B. and B.Com. in accounting from the University of Bombay. Gandhi was previously a distinguished policy fellow at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. He is presently a senior fellow at Governing Institute and consults with the World Bank in its efforts to create financially sustainable cities around the world.

Upon learning of his appointment, Gandhi said, “I am delighted to join the Board of Trustees of Gallaudet University. It will be my great pleasure to work with President Cordano and other trustees, as well as faculty and staff of the university to enhance its academic mission. I very much appreciate this opportunity to work for this unique academic institution.”

One of Gandhi's five grandchildren, Anisha, is deaf. He presently resides in Washington, D.C. with Panna Naik, a distinguished Indian poet.

We are fortunate to have him join our team and his help with strengthening the mission and vision of our university. Please join me in welcoming Gandhi to our community.
