DoIT Colloquium Lecture Series

DoIT Colloquium Lecture Series

You are invited to a free lecture, given by Dr. David Quinto-Pozos, titled “Simultaneous interpretation and grammatical diversity: The case of pronouns.” A description of the talk is given below:

Pronouns are complex and particularly diverse across languages, and they are among the core parts of grammar. Pronouns can mark various semantic distinctions (such as person, number, gender, formality), while also demonstrating a high level of ambiguity or no overt marking. An empirical question is whether such complexity and diversity across languages influences simultaneous interpretation. This talk outlines a research approach designed to investigate signed and spoken language pronoun use in interpreted settings.

Dr. Quinto-Pozos is a signed language linguist and certified interpreter who conducts research on signed and spoken languages. Currently, he works on the interaction of language and gesture, simultaneous interpretation, and signed language disorders. Dr. Quinto-Pozos also writes about signed language contact and language teaching. He currently directs the ASL program at University of Texas at Austin.
