Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach Presentations

Dear Campus Community:

As communicated on March 11th, the presentations for the position of Executive Director for Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach were video-recorded as a precaution against large gatherings. Below is biographical information that each candidate has provided:

Dan Hoffman, born to deaf parents, has used American Sign Language all his life. He grew up in various school settings, first using oral communication, then using total communication, and finally graduating from a residential school in Florida where everybody used ASL. After 14 years of working for the United States Postal Services, he decided to change his direction because of his passion for educating, presenting, recruiting, and administering in the Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing community.  He went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Gallaudet University and earned a Master’s and Doctorate’s in Deaf Studies/Deaf Education at Lamar University. While at Gallaudet, he was involved with several organizations, including the honor of serving as the vice president of Student Body Government.  With his background, his career journey moved from the USPS to a VRS company and then to entrepreneurship and now higher education. He has taught various courses in higher education for over 15 years. He was a program director at the Utah Valley University and is currently the ASL Education Coordinator at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He is an urbanist, scholar, advocator, and traveler. He is married with two daughters and three stepsons and is blessed with five grandchildren from his daughters.
Mark Sommer is the senior director of Outreach Consortium at RIT/NTID.  He is a graduate of California State University, Northridge (Bachelor of Arts, Political Science) and University of Massachusetts, Lowell (Master of Education, Education Administration).  Mark has been in his current position since 2007.  Before that, Mark worked as Assistant/Associate Director for NTID Admissions and Outreach for two years, Director for Outreach and Customer Relations for VISTA Information Technologies for seven years, Assistant Director for Gallaudet University Regional Center at Northern Essex Community College for two years and as Student Development Specialist/Recruiter for California State University, Northridge for almost four years.  Mark is married to Lisa DeWindt-Sommer (Gallaudet ’88) and they have two adult children.
