Gallaudet launches first-ever debate team

HI! My name is Brendan Stern from the Department of Government and Public Affairs. As the Debate Team head coach, I am excited to announce that Gallaudet University is officially launching our first-ever debate team, which will compete intramurally and intercollegiately this year.

I hope you will decide to try out for Gallaudet’s inaugural debate team for two primary reasons:

First, competitive debate has been called “one of the great equalizers” for minority achievement and educational opportunity. Why? It fosters tolerance for differences, cultivates critical thinking by making participants consider multiple perspectives, and polishes public speaking skills.

Second, debate is super-fun, which is why Oprah Winfrey, Nelson Mandela, Joaquin Castro, Stephen Colbert, and Elizabeth Warren are among many successful people who have debated competitively in high school or college.

If you are interested in trying out, the process is simple. You will need to submit a 6-8 minute persuasive speech to Brendan.Stern@gallaudet.edu about a controversial topic of your choice as a video attachment file by midnight ET Monday, August 10th.

Adam Bartley, the assistant coach, and I will then evaluate the persuasive speech using the criteria provided in the attachment, and announce the finalists by August 14th.

Finally, please know that the debate team selectees will be required to take a 3-credit course in the fall and spring semesters to prepare for various competitions this year.

Questions? Concerns? Please feel free to contact me anytime via e-mail. I am also happy to chat via VideoPhone or Zoom by appointment.
