Gallaudet University's ASL Connect and Howard University's Payne Program partner for language inclusion

Picture of participants

In the spirit of creating an inclusive language space at Howard University, Gallaudet University's ASL Connect: Business provided their most popular service, the Intercultural Communication (ICC) seminar and ASL workshop to staff members at the Donald M. Payne International Development Fellowship Program.

The seminar covered topics on how organizations can create a more accessible language environment for deaf staff, clients and other deaf owned businesses that these organizations plans to engage with, and want to learn the best practices in doing so. The ASL workshop provides ASL instruction in a specific field that the organization works in, using scenario-based activities that simulate what the participants will experience with real-life engagements in ASL.

Franklin Jones (MASLED, ’18) facilitated the seminar and workshop for the Payne Program participants, who greatly enjoyed the learning experience under his guidance. Maria Elena Vivas-House, Director of the Payne Program, mentioned that "We are so grateful to you for opening a whole new world to us! We so enjoyed the training in ICC and ASL. Our staff is very energized to continue learning through the free resources available online that you shared with us."

The ICC seminar and ASL workshop has been exclusively offered to many federal and private enterprises in the greater metro DC area. For more information, or to arrange bookings, please contact aslconnect.business@gallaudet.edu.
