HR Announcement: Working Remotely

To all Gallaudet Employees:

Gallaudet University is closely monitoring the situation with COVID-19 to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees and students.  Despite these uncertain times, we want to send a strong and clear message that we are all in this together. Gallaudet remains open and committed to providing the resources needed to support you.

We are doing our part to control the outbreak by following expert advice to maintain social distancing and following certain hygienic habits.  Therefore, effective immediately, we are beginning to transition employees to remote working when possible, and to provide an extra layer of support to those who will remain working on campus.  

We will roll out information about changes that will be implemented over the next week that will help to ensure the quality of work and productivity while balancing your need to care for yourself, your children or other family members.

Please know that decisions impacting our employees are guided by the following principles:

  • Your safety is critical to us.

  • You are a valued member of the Gallaudet community.

  • You will receive the support you need to contribute in your respective roles.

  • You will receive constant and clear communication from leadership.

  • You should know we are committed to minimizing any negative impact on you.

What you should expect to happen next:

Immediately - week of March 23, 2020:

  • Employees are informed if they will be working remotely, which will begin as soon as is practicably possible.
  • Employees who are designated to work remotely must review the Interim Remote Work Policy and the Remote Work Agreement Form.   The supervisor should send the agreement form to employees through AdobeSign.  Please ensure hr@gallaudet.edu is included for tracking purposes.

  • Employees who are not designated to work remotely should continue to report for duty as usual until further notice.

What we need you to do:

  1. Meet and communicate with your supervisor to share what you need in order to work successfully in this new environment (equipment, technology, and/or training needs (and other needed support)

  2. If designated as remote, review the Remote Working Policy and Agreement and discuss any questions or concerns you may have with your supervisor

  3. Review and sign the Remote Working Agreement.

To summarize the key points:

  • The University remains open unless Gallaudet is forced to close.

  • We are aware that many of you may find yourselves in situations where you may need flexibility and understanding to attend to personal matters.  You are encouraged to work closely with your supervisor to make arrangements as appropriate.

  • Gallaudet’s Interim Remote Working Policy is in effect immediately.

  • Your supervisor will let you know if and when you can work remotely.

We will not have all the answers right away but we will do our best to adapt and find ways to remain supportive of each other in the coming days.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your supervisor or Human Resources.
