Introducing the Campus Design and Planning architectural intern, Kiran Mapes

B&W picture of Kiran Mapes

My name is Kiran Mapes and I am a Deaf architectural intern working at the Office of Campus Design and Planning until mid-September. I grew up in San Diego being exposed to modern architecture which lead for me to be inspired to become an architect at a young age. As I got older, understanding more about what is around me architecture wise, I realized that there is lack of awareness of creating areas that are space/accessible friendly for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people. I want to contribute by designing accessible spaces for our deaf community and educate other architects about Deafspace. This internship opportunity allows for me to study and gain hands on experience working with the concepts of DeafSpace.

Currently, I am working on a small capital improvement project related to the renovations of the Merrill Learning Center (MLC) public restrooms. Additionally, I have been participating in weekly meetings regarding the Kendall School Division II Memorial project and the JSAC Marketplace/Rathskeller Renovation project. Being actively involved in these projects has helped me learn what it is like to hold an important role in a large project and seeing the collaboration among various people in order to finish a project on time. There is an endless amount of hard work and dedication involved from the start to finish in a project. Something interesting I have learned so far is how there is always something to be fixed or resolved during the building process. The opportunity to be involved in these projects has made a significant contribution towards my journey to become a Deaf architect.

I am currently living and getting my bachelor's in Architecture (a five-year professional degree program) at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, and will graduate in June of 2021. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors and taking photos of nature.
