Kendall Demonstration Elementary School and Venado Middle School Win the 2019 National Battle of the Books Competition

Gallaudet University Youth Programs is pleased to announce that Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (Washington, D.C.) and Venado Middle School (Irvine, California) have won the seventh annual Battle of the Books National Competition held on the Gallaudet University campus from March 29 to April 1, 2019.

Gallaudet’s Battle of the Books was established in 2012 with the goal of promoting literacy among deaf and hard of hearing middle school students. The competition also spreads the spirit of academic competition and good sportsmanship and encourages critical thinking skills.

The competition has three divisions, according to literacy levels, and includes multiple choice and short answer questions from the books as well as a presentation-style question and answer portion. Kendall Demonstration Elementary School won the Buff Division and Venado Middle School won both the Blue and Green Division.

“Friendly competitions like Battle of the Books offer middle school students the opportunity to grow their literacy and analysis skills, while they learn teamwork and socialize with other deaf students from all over the country,” said Jesse Saunders, Director of Youth Programs at Gallaudet. “Each team did a fantastic job, and everyone should be proud of themselves for the months of commitment they demonstrated preparing for the competition.”

Sixteen teams from across the country advanced to the national competition, from the 94 teams that competed in the preliminary and playoff rounds held in November and December 2018.

During an Alice in Wonderland-themed awards ceremony, characters such as Alice, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts thrilled the audience while handing out championship trophies, sportsmanship awards, and individual honors. The Buff Sportsmanship award went to Kendall Demonstration Elementary School and the Blue Sportsmanship award went to Indiana School for the Deaf (Indianapolis, Indiana).
