Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences leaders visit Gallaudet

A group of leaders from Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA), Oslo, Norway, including rector and president Curt Rice made a tour of the Department of Interpretation and Translation during an October 17, 2017, visit to Gallaudet. The visit was to explore the potential for collaboration between the two universities, both in student and faculty exchange and research.

HiOA is one of three institutions of higher education in Norway offering educational programs in sign language and related academic fields, and the only one in Oslo, where the largest deaf community in the country is located. HiOA has a small number of faculty members who cover a broad field of academic interests, including sign language linguistics, Deaf studies, sign language interpreting, and issues of education and language policy.

Since Gallaudet is in a prominent position internationally in these and other areas, HiOA considers the University a preferred partner for collaboration in seeking its expertise in expanding its offerings to deaf scholars. Gallaudet would benefit from the collaboration with HiOA by having access to study and work in a society that has given the Deaf community legal rights to bilingual education and interpreting services.

The visit was arranged by Gallaudet’s Office of Research Support and International Affairs (RSIA).
