PEN Program/Psychology Department faculty awarded Gallaudet’s Priority Research Fund

Congratulations to Gallaudet’s Ph.D. in Educational Neuroscience (PEN) faculty members Drs. Thomas Allen, Ilaria Berteletti, and Department of Psychology faculty members Drs. Sherry Eyer and Donna Morere for securing a Gallaudet University collaborative Priority Research Fund (PRF) grant.  The collaborative grant will help fund their “Language, Mathematics, Cognition, and Learning: Extended Educational Longitudinal Study (EELS-II).”

EELS-II is a follow-up study to the Early Education Longitudinal Study (EELS-I), which collected extensive data on a national sample of deaf preschool aged children from 2010 to 2013.  Data included yearly direct assessments of language, literacy and cognitive skills, indirect assessments of home and school characteristics through family and teacher surveys, and school policy characteristics collected from program administrators.  EELS-I was led by the Early Language and Literacy Lab, EL2, (Dr. Thomas Allen, director), a research hub of the Gallaudet University and National Science Foundation Science of Learning Center, Visual Language and Visual Learning, VL2.

Now, in collaboration with the Department of Psychology and the VL2 Numeracy and Educational Neuroscience Laboratory (Dr. Ilaria Berteletti, director), EELS-II will focus on EELS-I participants by again visiting their schools and conducting achievement assessments. The proposed research will follow a cohort of children for three years beginning at age 10.  EELS-II will investigate whether previously observed relationships between early language skills and emergent literacy among these children predict later literacy and numeracy outcomes.

Combined with EELS-I data, this new data will allow researchers to thoroughly examine the relationships among early education school, home, and child characteristics, and achievement in late elementary and middle school.

The study will launch in fall 2017.  Read the EELS-II abstract for more details and/or contact Dr. Allen with any questions.
