Subject:   Temporary closure of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf school building

Date:       June 14, 2019

During construction work earlier this week in the lobby of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf school building, a small amount of asbestos was found in a demolished wall. Out of an abundance of caution, the University, in consultation with industry experts, evacuated the building and disabled card reader access. This is a precautionary measure, and one that we feel best protects teachers, staff, and visitors.

Please note that this closure affects the entire MSSD school building, including the Gallaudet University Transportation Department and the Peter J. Fine Student Health Service. Contingency plans have been communicated to employees of both departments, and to university students who use SHS. The closure does not affect the MSSD gymnasium, residence hall, or townhouses.

MSSD teachers and staff have received information about how to retrieve their belongings, and about interim work space options. The Union Station shuttle buses will run on their normal route and schedule, with a stop at MSSD, but members of the Clerc Center and university communities are encouraged to avoid the area until further notice.

We do not know when the MSSD school building will reopen. A formal process needs to be followed to clean the area, perform air quality tests, and confirm that the area is clean. Please know that once the asbestos is completely removed, there will be no risk to building occupants, or to students when they return in the fall.

For those who may want to learn more about short-term exposure to asbestos, this link may be helpful: https://www.asbestos.com/exposure/short-term.

We thank all community members for their understanding and cooperation.
