Ten simple tips to help Gallaudet reduce energy use this summer

Ten simple tips to help Gallaudet reduce energy use this summer

This summer, please do your part to help Gallaudet reduce energy usage and expense.

Here are ten simple things that you can do to reduce energy use while staying comfortable this summer:

  1. Turn off lights in empty rooms and in rooms that receive sufficient daylight

  2. Turn off equipment when not in use

  3. Enable the power saving feature on your computer

  4. Close window blinds to reduce heat gain

  5. Turn up the thermostat by a degree or two (and make sure that thermostats are not blocked or close to any equipment)

  6. To help stay cool, wear light clothing and drink plenty of water (preferably tap water)

  7. Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator

  8. Contact the Facilities Department if the indoor temperature is excessively cold (below 72 degrees) and cannot be increased by adjusting the thermostat

  9. Keep windows closed when the outdoor temperature exceeds the indoor temperature (when in doubt assume this is the case at all times in July and August!)

  10. If you have a window air conditioner unit, keep the temperature set above 75 degrees when you are in the room and raise it to at least 78 degrees when you leave

With everyone's help, we can stay cool this summer AND lower our energy usage.

Please contact sustainability@gallaudet.edu if you have any questions or have more ideas for how Gallaudet can reduce energy usage.
