The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and the Finance Office Present "Did You Know?"

Did you know that the government shutdown could impact the submission of your grant proposal or your current grant's status?   Several federal government agencies are currently closed due to a lapse in funding.  Some of the federal grant making agencies that have been affected are the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Endowment of the Humanities, Federal Communication Commission, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Department of Justice.

At this time, grants.govNSF's Fastlane and Research.gov are currently available for submitting federal grant proposals; however, proposals will not be reviewed or processed until normal operations resume.  This means that it is likely that proposal deadlines will not be extended by federal agencies using these systems for proposal submission.  You should prepare your grant proposals for submission based on current deadlines.  Do you have an existing grant?  Please note that individual agencies will not be issuing new or continuation awards until after the shutdown concludes.  The majority of Gallaudet’s grants were approved for continuation well before the shutdown occurred.  The shutdown may also have an impact on your financial and programmatic reporting for your grant.  Our grants are mainly cost reimbursable, therefore our financial position is to maintain business as usual as it relates to grants.  We will continue to monitor the situation from a grants perspective, if the shutdown continues for an extended period of time.

To stay up-to-date and for a full list of federal agencies currently closed and those not affected by the shutdown, you can go to the OSP's website.  For more information on how the shutdown effects research at institutions of higher education you can read Inside Higher Ed's article Federal Shutdown Includes Agencies Supporting Research.  If you have questions related to the financial management of your award, contact Veronica Lee, Gallaudet’s Gift and Grants Accountant, at veronica.lee@gallaudet.edu.

Grants and research contracts are integral to establishing "Gallaudet as the epicenter of research development and outreach leading to advancements in knowledge and practice for deaf and hard of hearing people and all humanity."  A central component of Gallaudet University's mission is the enhancement of faculty and staff opportunities for creative and scholarly research and training.  If you have a question about the proposal writing process or if you have an idea or concept and would like to discuss potential funding opportunities, please contact Audrey Wineglass Foster at audrey.foster@gallaudet.edu. Be sure to also check out our website at http://www.gallaudet.edu/office-of-sponsored-programs for more information about our office.
