University Communications Q&A with student-athlete, Fatuma Ali

University Communications Q&A with student-athlete, Fatuma Ali

What's your major, and what are your plans after graduation?

My major is accounting. After graduation, I plan to continue my education, going to graduate school at either Gallaudet or the University of Maryland.

How do you feel about your senior softball season being cut off due to COVID-19?

It was devastating to be a senior and have my track and field season suddenly change. COVID-19 cut off my last season, and I felt so sad. One reason why I was so excited is because our home matches would have been hosted here at Gallaudet and I would be able to show the public that I am a proud Muslim wearing a hajib while running track!

What's the toughest thing about being a student-athlete?

The toughest thing about being a student-athlete currently is the weird feeling of not seeing my teammates in person. Losing my teammates leads me to lose my motivation somewhat. I remain positive by keeping in touch with them, but it just does not feel normal for me.

What's the most rewarding thing about being a student-athlete?

The most rewarding thing about being a student-athlete is having a huge commitment, the amazing teamwork within my team. Playing sports leads us to remain positive, and makes us learn time management and self-discipline.
