Language and human rights in Ireland

  • Date: March 1, 2016
Description

Language and Human Rights in Ireland: presented by John Bosco Conama, assistant professor, Trinity College Dublin.

This presentation provides insight into the current situation regarding Irish Sign Language and human rights advocacy. The Irish deaf community's political activism in seeking the official/legal recognition for ISL has grown steadily over recent years; most of the activities have been at local and national government levels. However, recent developments in community activism have expanded to include international human rights conventions which Ireland has ratified and adopted. These activities have met varying degrees of success and disappointment. Lessons learned from Irish deaf activism will be shared.

This event is sponsored by the ASL & Deaf Studies Department.
