Second meeting on ways to cultivate Gallaudet’s relationship with Nigeria

  • Date: December 12, 2017
  • Time: 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
  • Location: LLRH6 MPR 101
Description

The Office of Research Support and International Affairs (RSIA) previously invited members of the Deaf Nigerian community at Gallaudet and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to a meeting on November 15, 2017, to explore ways to cultivate Gallaudet’s relationship with Nigeria.

The meeting sparked so much interest that there was insufficient time to cover many important topics that RSIA intended to address.

Therefore, members of the Deaf Nigerian community at Gallaudet and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area are invited to continue the discussion at a follow-up meeting. Light refreshments will be provided.

The first meeting was an outgrowth of an initiative led by President Roberta Cordano for the University to explore new or enhanced ways for Gallaudet to work with Nigerian universities and other stakeholders in the Nigerian education system in order to benefit Deaf Nigerians.

The meeting proved to be a very successful forum for taking the first step in obtaining input on what needs to be done to address the educational needs of Deaf Nigerians. A very informative and productive discussion took place about the Nigerian economy and deaf people in the 21st century; state-run and private universities in Nigeria that may be ready to expand their programs/services to include deaf people; and areas of capacity building for universities in Nigeria, such as Deaf education and business.

Deaf Nigerians: Please make plans to attend the second meeting. Your input is important.
