One hundred fifty high school students, including 40 who are deaf or hard of hearing, visited Gallaudet on Monday, May 7, 2018, as part of a week-long Close Up Foundation program.

The students participated in an “Advocating for Your Community” seminar, conducted by Government and Public Affairs professors Drs. Brendan Stern and David Penna, in the Gallaudet University Museum. The deaf students were from American School for the Deaf, West Hartford, Connecticut; Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, St. Augustine, Florida; Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; SELACO Downey High School, Downey, California; New York School for the Deaf, White Plains, New York; and Iowa School for the Deaf, Council Bluffs, Iowa.

In this photo, Stern (left) discusses the importance of knowing one's community and the target audience, while Penna looks on.
