    President Roberta J. Cordano hosted a farewell reception for participants of the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) for Young African Leaders Initiative on August 2, 2017, at House One. The participants, five deaf and two hearing, will return to their respective countries after taking part in six-week training programs at various academic leadership institutes at universities across the US. Before they embarked on the training programs, they had taken part in a pre-institute program at Gallaudet June 9-16, the first of its nature. 
     
    The goals of the pre-institute was for the MWF program participants to  improve on or acquire American Sign Language (ASL) skills, relying on their knowledge of the signed language of their home country,  how to work adequately with sign language interpreters, and strategies for effective leadership and advocacy for self and the deaf community.
     
    Upon the completion of their, the Fellows, along with all other fellows totaling 1,000 young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa, returned to Washington, D.C., for the Presidential Summit, held July 30-Aug 2.
