Research EXPO Part II: Research Poster Session

The Research Poster Session is open to everyone (faculty, students and staff) to provide visual summaries of a research project, but is NOT required to include interdisciplinary research. A research poster is open for any topic. Applicants will submit a poster display that includes the research study proposal.  Applicants must design a poster proposal for submission (no written proposal).

Research Study Proposal Requirements:

The five criteria for submitting a study proposal must be followed in order to be considered eligible for a Research Poster. Criterion 5 is an option if one wants to make a suggestion for future interdisciplinary studies. The study proposal is evaluated based on the following factors by percentage to determine if the proposal is of sufficient quality for inclusion in the Expo.
Criterion 1: Stating the problem and posing questions/identifying key issues (10%)
The study must state its aims and objectives in terms of seeking to further knowledge and understanding relating to the questions, issues, or problems to be addressed.
Criterion 2: Research context (25%)
Applicants must specify why it is important that these particular questions, issues, or problems should be addressed; what other research is being conducted or has been conducted in this area; and what particular contribution this project will make to advance creativity, insights, knowledge, and understanding in this area.
Criterion 3: Research methods/approach (25%)
Applicants must state how, in the course of the research project, they will seek to answer the questions, address the issues, or solve the problems. They should also explain the rationale for their chosen research methods and why they think these methods provide the most appropriate means by which to address the research questions, issues, or problems.
Criterion 4: Research analysis and interpretation (30%)
Applicants must show what they have discovered. They need to refocus the purpose of the research, revealing any unexpected findings or patterns that were found, and state the implications of these findings. The conclusion can include any limitations of the study and possible future research.
Criterion 5: OPTIONAL: Identification of interdisciplinary research ideas (5%)
After conducting the research study, applicants may provide possible identification of interdisciplinary ideas at an early stage that may lead to future research.


Poster Size and Printing

The size of the poster can be no larger than three feet, top to bottom (vertically), and four feet, side to side (horizontally) (36x48). It is recommended that the layout be designed for large print formatting. Printing a research poster can be expensive. A few academic departments have offered to assist students and faculty from any program by making their printers available. They should first check with their department about the availability of printing posters, or making other arrangements. If no other options are possible, they may contact RSIA to reserve a time to have posters printed.

Note: Be aware that the printed version of the poster will reflect what is sent to a department. If submitters notice an error after the poster has been printed, they are financially responsible for printing a new poster. Therefore, please proofread posters carefully before submitting them for printing.


Students' proposals for both four-minute presentations and posters must include their faculty advisor's signature. The signature indicates that their advisor has reviewed the proposal and provided feedback. A Selection Committee member will communicate with each student applicant and faculty advisor.

Five-Plus-One Gallaudet Research Priorities

1. Learning and Achieving Throughout the Lifespan

Research related to evidence-based early childhood, K-12, and college/postgraduate education; professional and technical training;policies in pre-college and higher education, the workplace and government, and related topics.

2. Culture and Demographics

Research related to the arts, humanities, diversity within and among communities, ethics, underserved populations, characteristics of individuals, and related topics.

3. Technology

Research related to telecommunications, computer, and general technology accessibility; English-to-sign avatars; speech recognition; captioning; ASL and English learning and acquisition; assistive and workplace technology, and social technology in the D/deaf community; bioethics; ergonomics; robotics; and related topics.

4. Quality of Life and Subjective Experience

Research related to living as a d/Deaf or hard of hearing individual, including creativity, philosophy, bioethics, genetics, mental health, epistemology, and related topics.

5. Cognition and Neuroscience

Research related to furthering understanding of the relationship between cognitive phenomena and the underlying physical substrate of the brain in d/Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Topics include processing visual, tactile, and auditory communication and languages, separately and mutually; neurolinguistics; pedagogy; and adult learning.

6. Additional Priority - Science, Technology, Arts, & Mathematics

Research related to biology, chemistry, mathematics, public health, pre-medicine, and information technology fields.
