Gallaudet Research Expo 2018-2019 (RExpo 18-19) will continue its goal of uniting researchers and scholars, raising awareness of the many and varied research studies underway at Gallaudet, and fostering interdisciplinary research projects. Students, faculty, and staff across multiple disciplines will be given the opportunity to share ideas and showcase scholarly pursuits and achievements. RExpo 2018 will capitalize on the strengths of Gallaudet's research units, including science, technology, and math (STM); computer science; education; linguistics; neuroscience; interpretation and translation;  audiology; psychology; deaf studies; and other fields that reflect Gallaudet's research priorities.

The RExpo 2018 theme will be different from the two previous Expos. As stated above, past University Research Expos have encouraged an interdisciplinary approach to research studies, but RExpo 2018 will bring this concept to the forefront by making research across disciplines the central focus. The intent of RExpo organizers is that promoting interdisciplinary research will lead to its expansion, and as a result, lead to even more varied and meaningful studies between Gallaudet's research units in the future.

The REXPO 2018-2019 will be hosted by two parts on two separate days.

The REXPO Part I is a presentation session. It will be hosted on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and feature a keynote presenter from Georgetown University and student presentations, followed by a discussion forum hosted by the Offices of the President and Provost on a theme of Interdisciplinary Approach.

The REXPO PART II is a poster session. It will be hosted on on Thursday, April 4, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will be reserved for all students, faculty and staff showing their research posters.

RExpo 2018 Objectives

  • Expand interdisciplinary research at Gallaudet by increasing the number of students, faculty, and staff engaged in research studies.

  • Emphasize the importance of Gallaudet's research objectives.

  • Incorporate Gallaudet's priorities into research studies.

  • Expand networking among Gallaudet's community of researchers.

  • Motivate more individuals in the Gallaudet community to engage in scholarly research.

Expand Interdisciplinary Research at Gallaudet

The Interdisciplinary approach, combined with additional resources and powerful analytic tools, will enable novel and groundbreaking work in research.

This type of study allows students and faculty to learn by making connections between ideas and concepts across disciplinary boundaries. Students who learn this way are able to apply the knowledge gained in one discipline to another. For example, it isn't difficult to find a common theme that crosses boundaries in the fields of literature, art, and/or history, and science and/or mathematics. Studying a topic from different fields incorporates ideas, resulting in a more meaningful, enriching learning experience.

In order to achieve true interdisciplinary study in an educational environment, collaboration between faculty and students is necessary. Interdisciplinary teaching and learning is maximized when faculty from different disciplines work together to serve a common purpose, and also helps students make the connections between different disciplines or subject areas.

To help REXpo 18-19 reach its full potential, faculty with current research studies are encouraged to identify and recruit additional faculty to participate.
