Steven D. Collins, PhD, has been a faculty member in the Department of Interpretation and Translation for 29 years.  Dr. Collins is a Fulbright Scholar who has worked extensively with Deafblind communities in the U.S. and Italy, with a specialty in Tactile American Sign Language (TASL) interpretation.  His doctoral research focused on sociolinguistic variation in the use of non-manual signals in TASL. He received his doctoral degree from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Collins graduated from Gallaudet University in 1984 with major in Communication Arts. Since that time, he has been a Deaf interpreter.  Dr. Collins was the first Deaf student to get Master degree in Interpretation from Gallaudet University in 1992.  After he received his masters degree, he joined Gallaudet Interpreting Service as a Deafblind specialist. In 1994, he  became a faculty member at Department of Interpretation and Translation.  Early in his career journey, he was one of individuals who volunteered to work with RID to establish the Certificate of Deaf Interpretation Certification (CDI). and has worked as an interpreter for over 35 years.

Steven D. Collins, PhD is Assistant Professor in the Department of Interpretation and Translation and is currently the Coordinator for ASL Support and Deaf Interpretation.  He also works closely with Deaf interpreting students and supervises ASL coaching for the department.  Dr. Steven D. Steven D. Collins, PhD has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in the Department of Interpretation and Translation, including Practicum, Introduction to Interpreting, DeafBlind Community and Access, DeafBlind Interpreting, Discourse Analysis, Educational Interpreting, Legal Interpreting, PhD internships, MA Internship, Fundamentals of Interpreting, and History of Interpreting.

Steven D. Collins, PhD is member of the Metro Washington Association of the DeafBlind and coordinator of Support Service Provider (SSPs). He is on the honorary committee for the Fulbright Scholarship Program. Dr. Collins is chair of Institutional Review Board (IRB) and has been a member of the IRB committee for 10 years.
